Women in Real Estate then and now...
March marks Women’s History Month in the US, and as a woman in real estate, I feel compelled to talk about my journey to making this “job” a full blown career! I don’t just open doors, I am a full service Broker, often times collaborating with buyers or seller’s on their financial plan for the future. Yes, we plan not only the proceeds of the sale but the process of decluttering, of moving, of understanding market indicators, and so much more! I wear many hats and am constantly interviewing other professionals to ensure my network is of the most efficient to help solve any problem. Let’s reflect on the journey of women in real estate, then and now…
In 1908, when National Association of Realtors (NAR) was founded, the group was 100 percent male. The first woman was admitted to its membership in 1910, however it wasn't until 1974, when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act passed, that women in the U.S. were granted the right to open a bank account on their own and take out a mortgage. In other words, a woman was allowed to sell a house long before she could borrow to buy one! Go figure!
By 1975 a third of NAR members was female and today 64% percent of all Realtors are female.
Women strive to improve the communities we service and Women are naturally great real estate advisors in many ways.
Here are three top reasons on how women ( and I) lead the way for others:
1) We are Great Relationship & Community Builders
Last year I volunteered within multiple community events, held informational seminars for buyers/sellers, and even created a children's coloring book to educate young ones about the power of "home". As a broker I am always finding ways to build communities and create a network around me. Ask a broker for a recommendation, and she knows " somebody for the job". We intentionally connect with people so as to have a network of great talent at our fingertips all year long. If you've received a hand written note, a holiday gift, or a personal call - it's our way of making sure you know we remember you!
2) We Keep the Calm
The evidence shows that women take less risk, and save money by avoiding hyperactive decisions. When it comes to your next real estate transaction, we bring this superpower to you! We are also more patient when it comes to educating others and taking the time to give instructions. In fact, once a year I host a FREE Smart Move Seminar for my neighbors to learn about how their property values have been changing over the seasons. Featured below is my all women team of Elise Leve of Citizen’s Bank and Danielle Spallino, Esq. All three of us have worked seamlessly on analyzing a property before listing for sale AND saved buyers from the pitfalls of real estate violations, non-warrantable loans, and contractual terms.
3) Natural Nurturers
We want to make sure no stone goes unturned, and that you are taken care of. That means doing the extensive research to ensuring your investment, and your family is happy in your next home. In fact, I once put a listing in contract after showing it to 95 prospective buyers! I don't give up, because you matter to me! There are numerous initiatives I’ve participated in to help build community such as the NYC Vespa Club, the Smart Move Annual Seminar, Spring in the Heights fund raiser for PS 187’s art’s program, and even publishing a Children’s Coloring Book to help spur conversations about home ownership among children!
